Madame X

….less of an iconoclast and more of a sad example of the many women of our world are used for their beauty and then pushed aside and amounting to not much of anything….Virginie Gautreau

I’ve always been fascinated by her, she’s so sexy, with her white skin and velvety back dress with gold straps in a smoky room. She exudes sex. She is being objectified to the extreme in this painting and maybe that’s why it is so appealing to me. Then I read “I am Madame X,” by Gioia Diliberto, who uncovered the mysterious girl in John Singer Sargent’s painting.

Give this book a read, I learned about the American Civil War and Belle Epoque Paris! Another “it” girl with a glamorous lifestyle driven by her physical beauty.

Do you agree that physical appearance is essential to identity? For women, the answer is always yes.
